Knitting for a niece (or a nephew?) : W.I.P. Wednesday

I’m very excited about being “Auntie Shellyfish” again (wee!), and thought I would put some of these new knitting needles to use for my future niece or nephew…though I’m sure the baby is a girl.  Don’t ask me why, just a hunch.

I got my first stitches cast on to make this sweet little hat.  I’m limited to using the yarn in my little stash, but wish I could use more vivid colours.  I’ve got more white and lilac baby yarn that I used for this scarf, and it should look sweet.  That yarn is so very soft, it’s a shame I don’t have more of it.

I’m also hoping to make these little booties because they are just so cute!  I love baby feet so much – baby toes are perhaps the cutest thing in the world, they must be protected! The pattern seems pretty easy (read : I can figure it out) so if I have enough yarn left over after the little beanie I’ll give it a go.

I’d have liked to use the blue pictured above for both the hat and the booties, but over the holidays Sam somehow managed to make his way into my workshop and he took out his frustration of being left at home on everything he found.  I was a bit heart-broken because he gnarled up 5 skeins of baby yarn I’d been saving.  More than gnarled up – they were stinky, too – so I had to trash them.  He also ate a few gifts I’d just finished making, which was a very heavy lesson in impermanence and in the absolute fleeting nature of the universe.  Sigh.

Have you had any of your works of love destroyed by a small child or pet?  I’m sure you have!

Do you have any new W.I.P.s in the works? We would love to see what you’re up to! Snap a shot of your  “in progress” masterpiece and add it to the  W.I.P. Wednesday Flickr Pool. Whatever your works-in-progress, have a crafty week, and don’t forget to see what the other Wipsters are working on.

  1. How cute!! What a lucky baby! ❤

Oy! Bad Sam! I've had cats destroy… pretty much all my physical possessions, and some of my mental health! 😛

Now that you mention it, I am making a little "V" (for vegan) keyring thingie. I should add it to the Flickr pool!

  3. congratulations on being auntie shellyfish:)
I love booties too. They are just so darn cute. And I don’t think it’s very difficult to make a pair either.

I’m going to have a nephew (2nd one!) in spring too! exciting isn’t it?

  4. Congrats on being an auntie again!

I feel your pain . . . I tried knitting my husband a sweater a couple of years ago. N was 2 years old AND we had six cats. I think I frogged that poor sweater four times before finally using the salvaged yarn for various smaller projects!

  5. Ooooh congratulations on becoming aunty shellyfish – how exciting! Baby toes are definitely one of the cutest things EVER and your lucky little niece’s toes (hunches are good) will be totally protected in those booties. The little hat will keep her head and ears safe too.
Sorry to hear about your precious things getting mauled!

  6. I have definitely had too many gifts destroyed by my Mom’s dog. As you mentioned it is a good lesson in what is important.

I made my niece a cowl scarf for Christmas that she loved. I’m glad my knitting skills have advanced because my oldest nephew received a number of interesting looking toques.

  7. Your new niece (or nephew) is lucky to have you as an auntie – lovingly made handknits are such wonderful gifts!
I’ve just finished a shrug for my niece, and immediately received an order for legwarmers for next Christmas!

  8. I love nibbling on little baby toes. Unfortunately they get much less appetizing as they get older. *sight* Lucky nephew and soon to be niece to have such a talented and understanding auntie!

    • Oh this is nothing…this is what looked “really good” and I tried to save it, but when I started untangling yesterday I noticed the, er, “odor”…it’s a good thing he’s so cute, or he’d end up in the compost heap!
