W.I.P. Wednesday : Pants or When Your Model Has The Shiggles*

Happy W.I.P. Wednesday everyone! I was so excited to see so many of you W.I.P.ping last week with me! If we get enough of us W.I.P.ing I’ll make a little linky page to share all that creativity with the rest of the world. It’s so empowering to see all the craftiness and artistic energy everywhere – and in so many different ways.

I should actually be slaving away over a hot sewing machine to try and finish up some gifties, but here’s some of what I’ve been working on this week : pants! Had I known how obscenely simple sewing children’s pants was, I’d have done this ages ago! All you really need is a pair of pants that the kidlet wears to use as a template (and you can play with the size from there). Because they’re all little and stuff, you’re pretty much just cutting and sewing straight(ish) lines. There are several great tuts (just use our friend google), and if the sun ever returns to France I may even take some “play-by-play” photos to show you how terribly easy it is to make pants for the kidlets in your life.

Making the pants is easy.

Taking pictures of Guppy wearing the pants? Not so much…

picnik-collage
They’re a bit of a boot cut, and just long enough to be cool (according to M. Fish).

chordetailsThe fabric is a light brown cord with embroidered flowers that I was unable to get a close-up of because Guppy had way too many things to do and couldn’t we take pictures later?

My next experiment was pajama pants with a blue fleece remnant I picked up when I was in the States last summer. I am now regretting not having tried to track more down because it’s just so warm and cozy and perfect for pj’s – and would have been great for a matching top, but I just don’t have enough left!

This is an action shot of “Indiana Jones” who needed a whip and so made do with my tape measure. Not sure how Indie would feel about the heart appliqué, but Guppy liked it.

I’m 3 1/2 & I won’t stay still for anyone,especially not the forces of evil!

These were a practice pair, actually. Santa is bringing her some dino pj’s…so Santa better get sewing!

Tacha’s W.I.P. is a great “to do” list she’s put up as a pdf to share. Go check it out!

*Shiggle is of course when you shake & wiggle. We do it all the time around here.

You should definitely put together a play-by-play post!! Both pairs of pants are so adorable! And since I now have mine own sewing machine (yay!), I could even attempt them myself.
I’ll join in on WIP wednesday again next week :-)

I love the idea of a WIP share page! I used to sew all the time but haven’t in years–I so miss it! Maybe if I can shiggle through all this work on my desk, I’ll get back to being crafty (sorry, I had to–I’d never heard it before and you KNOW how I love new words!!) ;)

Cute pants! I can empathize with the not being able to photograph children. They are busy little people! I am always surprised when I get a photo of Grace that isn’t a blur :) I need to go educate myself on what exactly a WIP is. But, if it is craft entailed, I am definetely intrigued and a share page sounds like a great idea :)

Those are the coolest, most awesome, flippin’ sweet pants ever. You are so talented!!!! Lucky Guppy. Make me a pair too please. I guess I could attempt my own since I have a sewing machine…

yay for W.I.P Wednesday! you’re the best, Shelly! and who knew that pants for wee ones aren’t too complicated! i’ll have to let my neighbor know. she has a wee one who adores hello kitty and i bet she would be happy to know that pink pajamas might not be too hard to create! thanks! the pants & pjs you made for Guppy are awesome! i adore the fabrics you pick!

man, you make me want to learn to sew! hmmmmmmmm. i might have to do some research and see if it’s something my un-coordinated butt can do.

I’d love to see what the other WIP-ers are up to. Please make a list!

Great trousers – I haven’t been brave enough yet to sew clothes so I would be interested in seeing how you do it step by step.

Thanks for the link. I used Corel Draw Graphics suite. A LOT cheaper than photoshop etc and for the likes of me, just as good.

The sisterhood of the Guppy pants! I love them! And your little Guppy is the cutest model ever, even if she won’t stay still!

The brown pants are my favorite and she is so cute. The sisterhood of the Guppy pants, that’s pretty funny.

I remember when my boys were little all they ever wanted to wear were sweat pants so I was constantly making sweat suits for them! I always had fun and they went together so quickly and easily! I don’t have time to sew anymore. I barely have time to do what I do! :-D But BIG KUDOS to those of you who do!

Both pants are adorable! I need to get some lightweight fleece and whip up some lounge pants for Alex. He has a favorite pair that are starting to get too short.

  14. 17 Amanda December 18, 2008 at 5:55 am

Your shiggles are giving me the giggles..
I love Guppy’s new pants! Are you making them in adult size? I’ll take seven pairs and if you can stitch the day of the week across the bottom I’ll be oh so happy ;)
Hope you get some sunshine soon…

haha oh my god so cute!! i miss my mom making me clothes :)

  16. 19 Vivacious Vegan December 18, 2008 at 7:33 am

Shiggles is such a fun word. I’m going to have to remember that when I’m with my niece.

My mom used to make a lot of our clothes and I think she still has my “favorite” pants. She says they were my favorite but I have to question that. They were made out of stretchy polyester in a neon lime green color with white seagulls on them. Hah! Guppy is lucky. Her pants are adorable!

la jolie petite nana qui a beaucoup d’energie! elle veut bien partager, n’est ce pas? not even coffee does the trick anymore over here.

  18. 21 chocolatecoveredvegan December 18, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Hahahahaha just like my puppies– they won’t stand still so I can photograph their cuteness. But of course Guppy is even cuter than a puppy :o ).

  19. 22 Alice (in Veganland) December 18, 2008 at 6:54 pm

Hahaha, Guppy is so adorable… and so are her pants!

  20. 23 twoveganboys December 18, 2008 at 7:23 pm

The pants are so cute. And Arthur loves to shiggle, especially before bedtime to avoid getting sleepy. I posted some work on my page today.
