No Raw Thursday, No Iron Cupcake and No to Palin!

Don’t forget to leave a comment here to be entered

into my little drawing for a felty-love pouch!

Visiting in-laws means no Raw Thursday for the Shellyfish…proving true to form in my normal “I have to do everything really well so my in-laws love me” way, I’ve been very busy cooking & baking up a storm, and it just wouldn’t do for me to be eating a separate, raw meal at the same table… I’m working on showing how “normal” vegan cuisine really is, and while I don’t think raw cuisine is “weird” (ok, sometimes it IS), I do think it would appear a bit strange for me to be eating my Raw Tacos while they dine on the lasagna that is in the oven! JFTR (just for the record), my brother and sister-in-law are adorable, and they would love me even if I didn’t cook up a storm…it’s that perfectionist/over-achiever curse from being a ballet dancer all those years…not them! So, see you next Thursday for some raw goodness!

The Public Broadcasting System, or PBS, is the primary public and commercial-free channel in the United States (un peu comme ARTE ou France 5 mais sans les pubs). This channel provides many incredible educational programmes for children, excellent news coverage, and fabulous documentaries. There is a very un-scientific poll up on their web site asking people if they feel Ms. Palin is qualified…http://www.pbs.org/now/polls/poll-435.html you don’t have to be a U.S. citizen to realize that McCain’s feeble attempt at harvesting the female votes that would have perhaps gone to Hillary Clinton is a catastrope in the making…she may be a woman, and it’s always exciting to see more women in power, but she has a horrible environmental record, is not a pro-women’s rights voter, and has no experience with foreign policy AT ALL. Please click the link – it’ll take 20 seconds – and let your voice be heard! Oh, and check out the uber-talented Kindara and her fab Quilted Obama T-Shirt – because everything is political, our choices, our voices, and especially our art!

I have had too much on my baking pan this month, so I’m passing on the Iron Cupcake challenge for September (much to the chagrin of M. Fish). Please go check out some of these excellent entries from some of my favorite bloggers : The amazing Amanda braved post-Ike conditions to make her Basil-infused Chocolate Mousse Cupcakes, Diann has some adorable popcorn-decorated Peach Gazpacho Cupcakes, the Michigander (I love that word!) Maggie has some beautiful Basil-Citrus Cupcakes, and Sweet Potatoe has delicious Coconut Cupcakes with Mango-Basil filling and Coconut Frosting. Today is the posting deadline, so the hills will be alive with the sounds of cupcakes!

Have fun with your in-laws!!! You’re going to KNOCK THEIR SOCKS OFF with your delicious eats :-)

I am quite positive that you’re lasagna is going to wow your inlaws! I feel you in the perfectionist/overachiever curse! I’ve always got to bake/cook something if I’m going to a party/meeting someone.

Oh my, thank you for shouting out to my cupcakes! Your cupcakes are missed in the Iron Cupcake challenge this month!

I just submitted my vote (NO) on PBS and the results are even steven. Yikes.

I passed on Iron Cupcake, too. I had no cupcake inspiration this month.

I do have Daring Baker’s inspiration, but with only two days to go, I better get a move on!

Have a good time with your in-laws. I understand that that situation can be stressful, so I hope it goes well!

Thanks for the pbs link. I think the vp candidates are debating here in St. Louis in a week! Should be interesting.

You’re right that it’s important to let others see how wonderful and accessible vegan food is. Thank you for the PBS link; as I was reading what you wrote about Palin, I thought, “I couldn’t have said it better myself!” Oh, and the Obama quilted t-shirt is fabulous!

My in-laws love vegan food, so I am fortunate. Now my parents, that is a different story. If it does not come with a side of animal flesh, then they do not consider it a meal. Disgusting! But in their minds, we are the weirdos and that is fine by me.

I had to miss the cupcake challenge this month too due to the doctor putting me on bedrest. Our newest member will be making his debut soon.

    Go Obama Go!

Thanks for the love! I always think of geese when I hear Michigander.

Great looking t-shirt link! Now, I really want to get sewing!

Of course you will impress the inlaws! Give me all your tips, I am going to see my inlaws in October and they are farmers who think vegans are crazy extremists.
Thank you for the no-to-Palin link.

Glad you posted the survey link… everytime I hear Palin’s name I just roll my eyes and shake my head. Scary thoughts.

And thanks for the shout out for my ICE basil entry. There were so many fabulous entried this month, and there would have been one more if you had entered I’m sure. But I definitely understand the baking pan being too full!

I have no doubt your in-laws would love you even if you didn’t cook AT ALL. . . . but I’m sure they’re appreciating the vegan yummies. And I think you’ve been in France long enough to absorb some of the local language–you wrote “programme” instead of “program”–comme c’est adorable! (hope I got that right–I’ve been losing my own French, helas. . . ) ;)

  12. 12 shellyfish September 26, 2008 at 4:42 pm

Good grief! Merci, Ricki! I didn’t even notice! I do that all the time in emails to friends & family – little English words and French words where they don’t belong… I also type flower rather than flour sometimes…I do more in French than in English so I really have to watch my “anglais”!

  13. 13 MariaRose September 26, 2008 at 7:29 pm

I gave up long ago with trying to make my in-laws like my food. You are nicer than I am.

  14. 14 Camille September 26, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Big no to Palin! Go Obama! (That picture of her with the moose she shot just makes me nuts, not to mention a lot of other concerns regarding her that make me nuts.)

  15. 15 aTxVegn September 26, 2008 at 8:49 pm

I have no doubt your guests will be extremely impressed with the food you prepare.

I thought you were missing from the cupcake challenge. Thanks for the mention. All the vegan entries are great!

  16. 16 ChocolateCoveredVegan September 26, 2008 at 9:05 pm

I checked out all of those sites… there is NO WAY I am voting, because they ALL look amazing. I only wish there were real judges who got to EAT said cupcakes; I’d sign up in an instant! (Although I would probably not be able to choose a winner and would therefore be disbarred as a judge!)

  17. 17 Bianca- Vegan Crunk September 26, 2008 at 10:55 pm

Excuse my French (ha, I guess I should English to you cause you are in France), but Sarah Palin is a big stupid bitch and I hate her. Hate her, hate her, hate her guts. Yup. Obama all the way, baby.

I feel ya on those cupcakes! I’m skipping too so I can move and pack and all. But when I saw that Amanda braved a hurricane to make hers, I kind of felt bad about skipping….oh well. She’s definitely getting my vote this month.

  18. 18 jen September 28, 2008 at 4:51 pm

I”m with ya in this… too much already in the oven! Can’t wait to see what else you’re up to!
